The essentials that every sorostitute needs in her closet

One of our loyal followers asked for a post about the essentials for every Sorostitutes closet, so here is a post for Holly on what is in the walk in of our Srat castle.

There are four main components of a Sorostitute's closet: weekday, formal, country club/date/home, and theme.

Weekday- This is your wardrobe for class, running errands and baking

  • Nike shorts, Frat Tee (stolen from a current or former fratdaddy), sorority tee from date party, rush or greek week, nikes matching your shorts, rainbow flip flops or letter flip flops
  • Sperry's, Jcrew oversized cardi, and designer jeans of choice (esp if you have an advising meeting)
  • Black Yoga Pants, UGGs and a Northface for winter-don't forget the oversized sunglasses and white v-neck, coastie!
Formal

  • For overnight fraternity formals- long, formal dress that no one has worn before and you can make sure that no one will have. Bring lots of matching lingerie and extra jewelery, as well as all your best lily dresses and matching lettered sweats for laying around post hookup/hangover
  • A reader commented asking for new and fresh ideas for her fratdaddy's formal giftbasket (besides cooler, etc). How about matching koozies for the two of you? or matching gameday buttons? anything matchy is right up my alley, however any post-game hangover remedies are always appreciated
Home/Country Club

  • When in doubt, think of that poor, martyred pi phi rush chair who sent out that absolute BIBLE of an email to her chapter. (I won't link because if you haven't read it you are a GDI who hasn't had internet access in 18 months)
  • Tory flats, Jack Rogers, Sundresses in summer and cashmere in fall. Think Jcrew, Vinyard Vines, Polo tennis dresses, lacoste and Sperry's for the yacht (or all the time, right Southern Belle?)
  • Family Time is NEVER wasted- Match your purse to Mommy Dearest and you are sure to get an extra allowance next month in the bank acct, wear the Yurman or Tiffany studs your Gram gave you for your birthday and expect another well-earned present for thanksgiving!
  • Sample- Home for a long weekend in Fall:
    • Friday- "traveling" outfit- belted oversized cashmere sweater, Tory flats and dark skinnys with an oversized longchamp.
    • Saturday at the hunting house waiting for daddy and fratdaddy- Patagonia, Jcrew cords, uggs and a matching VV headband
    • Sunday brunch- lilly dress with shrug, Jack Rodgers flats (or sandals if you live below the Mason-Dixon)
Theme Party Wardrobe

  • Theme parties are my absolute favorite. I would turn down the governors ball for a good theme party. ABC, toga, neon, The Letter _, anything except redneck/GDI themed parties and I am there. Over my years in the Srat, I have amassed a great collection of random costumes- and I suggest you and your girls start immediately.
    • Neon American Apparel Leggings in at least 3 colors
    • oversized vnecks and tights in matching colors
    • Glitter
    • Ties- not ugly rejects
    • Cute RLPolo patterened twin sheets in matching themes (toga)
    • Caution Tape (ABC)
    • Old Prom Dresses and Formal Dresses
    • Pirate hat, sailor hat, nurse hat, trucker hat, cowboy hat
    • Do you know how to make a tshirt dress with an xxl tee?
    • colored hair spray
    • flesh colored leotard
    • cat ears, devil horns, halo and wings
    • boarding school/prep school/catholic school uniform
    • cute wedding-looking dress
    • golf clothes
    • trashy club clothes (eurotrash)
    • beret (tour de franzia)
    • Ugly Christmas Sweater
    • Any holiday themed Claire's headband, bows, etc
Here are the basics of a Sratty wardrobe, as compiled by Slampiece during a boring lecture. Comment with suggestions, things I missed, etc .
xoxo

  1. North Face is too GDI now. Patagonia & Mountain Hardwear should be in every sorostitutes wardrobe

    ReplyDelete
  2. I agree about the North Face, and UGGs unfortunately. Kinda like Vera Bradley - once the GDIs get ahold of something, I can't stand it. Sratstars like us MUST separate ourselves from the masses.

I think sratty fashion depends on how dressy your campus is. Like I personally only wear Nike shorts and tees when I'm running errands or an early morning class. If my first class of the day isn't until 10 or so, I'll wear a Ralph Lauren polo dress and my sperrys or Jack Rogers. (Ralph Lauren Polo dresses are a must, ladies - there's nothing sexier to a man then a pretty girl in his favorite brand!)

    ReplyDelete
  3. I was going to add patagonia whilst hunting w/daddy and frat daddy but ended up not, but of course patagonia! Whether you like it or not, those sorostitutes north of the mason-dixon will probably be wearing northface and uggs for at least a few years to come, brr!

    ReplyDelete
  4. this might be a silly question.. but if I'm getting a T-shirt from one of my sororities functions.. Large or XL? and is it appropriate to wear the leggings underneath nike shorts with my tennis shoes?

    ReplyDelete
  5. depends on how you are going to wear the tshirt. I get a small or xs if I am going to wear it normally with jeans. if you are going to wear it with JUST leggings it must cover all of your ass AT LEAST, so prob an xl. just a large if you are going to wear it with nike shorts. I only wear leggings under my shorts to go workout when it's cold, but I guess if you can pull it off....

  6. DYING. This? Is amazing. Nice work, ladies.

  7. So I've been reading your blog (and TFM) for a month or so now, and it's really making me wish I had looked at southern schools. It's too late because I'm a junior now, at a Big Ten university, and I do love life here. But I didn't join a sorority up here. Northern greek life isn't for me, I have plenty of fun without it, but I have to admit I'm jealous of the Greek life you have in the south. I wish I didn't have to wear ugly hoodies to my football games or rely on my RSOs to build my resume. I still managed to land a fratdaddy in a top house, who is two years older than me and in law school, so I guess I'm not TOTALLY hopeless. My family has money (new money I guess, per great-grandma's inheritance) so I have the funds to be as sratty as possible. Just wanted to say I appreciate this post, it's given me some info on how to dress with southern class. Sorry for those not happy that a northern GDI follows you :\

  8. No matter you're circumstances. Without the letters, you're just as a GDI as the rest of them.

    ReplyDelete
  9. learn some grammar hun. same thing happened to my best friend from high school and she is as sratty (if not more) than I am.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Love love love jacks. A must have.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Completely agree on the Patagonia, but as a sorority women from the Big 10, Northface is absolutely necessary. However, the second I get home to Charleston, the uggs are off and the sperrys are on:) love this article!

  12. if you're in a sorority in the north does it still count if you act/dress like a sister from the south?

  13. RE: if you're in a sorority in the north does it still count if you act/dress like a sister from the south?
    Answer- Yes.

RE: It's too late because I'm a junior now, at a Big Ten university....
Answer- you ARE a GDI, but bless your heart for reading and appreciating. send your daughters to get the proper education (and letters)

Love this. When you are stuck in up north like us MN srats, we stick with our Uggs and Northface (monogramed or with chapter letters, obvi) simply due to weather circumstances. We work everything else tho, weather permitting :) Don't forget pearls 24-7!

    ReplyDelete
  15. On my Midwest campus, everyone wears Northface, leggings and Ugg boots in the winter. It's cold- we have to. I will say that sratty girls ALWAYS have name brand... GDI's usually have knockoff.
@JustFrattingAroundMN- my mother gave me a pearl necklace when I got my bid. I wear it about twice a week. :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm a junior at an ACC university, and I just wanted to make sure everyone has their skinny gold hoops polished and ready for this fall weather! They are a great addition to this season's Patagonia colors and are a must have. Obvi pearls are essential but these gold hoops are just one more way of seperating ourself from 'them'.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Is that a joke? Gold Hoops? Yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  18. As the mother of a sorority girl in the midwest, I just considered this my Christmas shopping list. Thanks so much!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with Piper John. I'm a GDI and I wouldn't be caught dead in gold hoops. They're tacky.

    ReplyDelete
  20. texas girls know better, gold hoops? please. it's pearls or diamond studs.

    ReplyDelete
  21. she screams like little johnNovember 3, 2010 at 3:20 PM

im a fratdaddy and i approve this message

  22. It would be so helpful if someone could post something about how to make different styles of XL t-shirt dress or something along those lines. I saw this totally adorable girl at a football game the other weekend wearing a t-shirt dress with a vertical ruffle going down the back and I'm dying to know how to do that. If anyone could tell me that'd be great :).

    ReplyDelete
  23. big10 gdi: same. i'm almost positive we go to the same school, too. i feel girls like us are few and far between. even the girls in sororities here are not sratty by any means.

i went to visit my friends at uk and my friends at bama and trust me, that is as sratty as it gets.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Amazing list!

As a sorostitute at a southern private university, I love this list! I do have a question for other girls though- Whats your take on Lucky Brand Jeans? I havent been able to decide if I like them or not.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Lucky Brand is for high schoolers and GDIs. Go for True Religion for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lucky Brand jeans are tacky and for middle schoolers. People who can't afford True Religions will get Lucky Brand. Gross. Please do not.

    ReplyDelete
  27. As a sratty lady from the south, while I love everything on the list (and can afford it). I dont think its what makes or breaks a lady. Not everyone can afford it and I dont think we should make it sound that way. It's all about class and I know some GDI's that have so much more than some of my sisters.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Patagonia and Fryes. Why has no one mentioned Fryes? They are a must for the winter. I agree with the person above, I can afford all these items, but I feel like it's all about how to dress with class.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anon 3:27, if your school still has 19+ bars then yes. I feel like you either go there or the unfortunate case of the other Big Ten school which officially lost their 19+

    ReplyDelete
  30. oh come on, never true religion or lucky - always J Brand. they don't get more flattering or classier.

    ReplyDelete
  31. What would you suggest I wear for a mountain weekend trip? I have the standard Columbia and VV fleeces and of course my Kavu purse and wallet. I've decorated my frat daddy's cooler and he loves it! But I'm not a really outdoorsy kind of girl? What should I bring?

    ReplyDelete
  32. True Religion? Lucky Brand? Ladies...
It's J Brand all the way. But question: Are Yurman cookie earrings an acceptable substitute for the typical pearl/diamond earring staple?
    And are UGGs too GDI?
And did this list include Hunter or Burberry rainboots? (essential)

    ReplyDelete
  33. What are so cute outfits to wear out to parties and bars when it starts to get cold? Jeans and cute top or sweaterdresses are almost too casual for the southern school i go to. Also, is the black channel nail-polish too GDI?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think the official ruling on UGGs is that if your little feeties are going to freeze and fall off if you don't wear them, then they are absolutely okay. Frostbite is not sratty, and certainly not pleasant. So, sorostitutes in the Midwest MUST wear them.

And I personally think nothing is cooler than a girl who rocks black nail polish wearing J.Crew head to toe. The cool thing about sorority girls all over is that we are so different but linked in a special bond. So, for me at least, anything that adds a unique flavor to a standard outfit is fun.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Black Chanel nail polish is absolutely GDI. If you're the type to want dark nails, try navy or plum.

    ReplyDelete
  36. why are you all so afraid to be yourself by yourself that you need the opinion of everyone else "just like you" to decide whether or not its "acceptable" to wear a certain pair of shoes. This entire post is about all of you trying to become exactly the same. Stifle out all of your unique qualities so you are just as different from one another as the pearls on your necklace.
    Different is beautiful too.
    All of your imperfections are.
    Don't erase them.
    Embrace them.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Completely agree! Embrace your imperfections. The sorority girls at my school have class, but we do not focus on the social class of each girl. One of my cutest outfits that all my sisters loved was an awesome collection from the thrift store: some skinny cords, an oversized vintage sweater, and eco-friendly sneakers. When it gets cold outside, it does not matter what brand of jacket you wear as long as you have one on (the thicker, the better). As sisters for life, we love (and hate) each other based on personality - not on brand name clothing. I do not know what schools that you guys attend, but I would never choose to be in a sorority like yours.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I am just curious why you have not mentioned the jewelry that is necessary to have. Like a Pandora bracelet? Definitely becoming a must have for us sorostitutes.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I've been sick lately and haven't bothered to check up on your blog!

    This is amazing!

I will say, though, that I think we sorositutes need to start dressing better. I wear nikes and baggy tees to my early morning class and even to run some errands around town but for classes later and the day and to on-campus events, I wear polo dresses all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  40. sorostitutes also need a great family tree besides a "i'm gonna make you jealous" wardrobe. Could you maybe do a blog about "family" in a sorority because those GDI's just don't understand what a little or big is.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Girls in the South: Thank you so much for these posts! I am on the West Coast and I hate it. Sorority is the only thing saving me. I need to remember that I am truely Southern at heart. Keep up with the great tips and updates. They are much appreciated!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Dear Blogger,

Thanks so much for posting this! Its good to have everything listed out, especially since all the sorority gals in the SEC school I go to abide by a lot of the items on this list.

My only thing is, is that its difficult to keep up fashion-wise.
Yeah, my parents are able to pay for both my college tuition and my sorority, but its not like I can easily obtain multiple Lilly dresses, Patagonia is definitely out of the question, and now the somewhat recently popular Longchamp purses. (I dont know about the rest of ya'll, but at my school just about every sorority girl owns at least one Longchamp purse, and goodness they're pricey.)

So what do you say for those of us who can't readily obtain these things? Like, are there any brands that are affordable, yet sratty at the same time? (I understand trying to find it on sale, but even on sale is a lot of money.)

If you have any advice, I'd really love it! Thank you so much!

    -An SEC Sorority Girl

  44. ^^^^ Eff haters. Go back to your dorms, crappy apartments and mediocre lives. Sorry I'm not sorry for being me and loving the life I live.

  45. As a sratty Southern lady myself, I love this list but do agree with the November 4 anonymous ladies who have encouraged us to cultivate our own styles. I appreciate the post - fun to read and compare! - but I think there's a certain point at which we can lose sight of what classy really means. It's good to recognize and desire high quality clothing, but at the same time, a Southern sorority lady shouldn't need the labels on her clothing to prove that she is valuable. It is herself that is classy, not the clothing she wears. We can transform our clothing by nature of who we are, but our clothing will never hide a poor personality.

There's also no point in pretending like we're inherently better than other women because we were welcomed into a sorority. Perhaps we have been lucky enough to -become- better women because of it. We may therefore be privy to a perspective that independents are not, but it is never completely ourselves who merited becoming a sister. A large part of it was also luck - being in the right family, in the right school, at the best place and time. It is not morally right nor is it even useful to put down others for something so impacted by circumstances beyond their control. It only serves to drag down our image as being negative and unreasonably elitist. Having high personal standards is one thing; being bigoted is another.

As for "questionable" items... pair small gold hoops with a peach cashmere cardi, white blouse, dark cords, and Sperrys. If you want to wear black nail polish, be sure to keep your nails rounded and medium-short length, add a silver Yurman ring, and pair it with a short charcoal semiformal dress. I would tend to agree that North Face has become less prestigious in the South, but we still wear them for running errands and attending winter sports events or outdoor philanthropies. It's all in how you wear it. :)

That said, there are certain points of no return. Ed Hardy is one of them!

    ReplyDelete
  46. gabby: you are one awesome, classy gal!! precious post :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Im not a sorority girl, Im a gay frat star from a gay frat, but i approve this post! I also agree though that it should be mountain hardware instead of north face. I love wearing my mountain hardware jacket with my uggs on cold days! :))

    ReplyDelete
  48. can u please give me some good going out ideas?

usually i wear an oversized button down, skinny's, and sperry's if its low key and a dress and heels or skinnies and heels if its a nicer party... but i never feel like im "sratty" enough

    ReplyDelete
  49. going out? no sperry's!!!! wear heels or boots!!! we have a saying in my house - your top priority should be your first twelve inches (hair and make-up and jewelry!!) and last 12 inches - SHOES. Going out you have have have to have good shoes. heels heels heels. If you put the effort into those two, the rest will (hopefully unless you're hopeless) follow.
if you have good shoes, you're more likely to wear cute dresses, silk tops, nice jeans with them to match because no one wants to uglify their best pair of great heels.
for going out, i like dresses and skirts (you can always wear tights in the winter under them) in dark or neutral colors with a top or accessory in a bright color to pop. I always reccommend wearing a color that brings out your eyes or your peaches and cream skin - play up your assets.
And for goodness sake, wear good shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @anon 1123 pm: yup, we go to the same school! greek life here is SO different compared to the south. go visit a school in the SEC and you'll know what i mean.

    ReplyDelete
  51. How do we feel about pea coats?

    ReplyDelete
  52. My option on UGGS is that they are becoming way to popular with GDI's. So my sorority and I have became fans of Koolaburra shoes. They are alot warmer than UGGS for us stuck up here in the Midwest!

    ReplyDelete
  53. An SEC Sorority Girl from 11/4, if you're a sample size, buy Lilly and other nice brands in children's sizes and get them altered to a women's fit. I usually have to do this because I'm too small for adult sizes, but they're usually about half the price and the largest size in children's is about a women's sample size. Hope it helps.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I have to say, some of these comments make me sick. The way some people think they're better than others because they have a shit ton of money is horrifying. And btw, I'm a member of a sorority at a southern private school. get over yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  55. So what would you all say is the classiest haircut/style for the proper souther belle sorority girl?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Also, what would you say the srattiest brands of cowboy boots are? Never having bought cowboy boots before, I feel like I have an idea of the style and look like I want, but I want to make the sure the brand is right too.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I was just reading this while online shopping on Vineyard Vines and was wondering what your opinion was on my new VV tote, still acceptable in winter or no?

    ReplyDelete
  58. FOR ALL HATERS

We're not trying to be mono-style conformists. We are simply setting the rules of the game on what is classy and what is not. We are also giving ideas on wardrobe staples, especially for incoming freshmen that need a little guidance. Of course its great to have personal style, but I doubt you would recruit anyone wearing really tacky clothes. If there's a dress code for guys, there's one for girls. And sometimes we need a little reassurance from our fellow sratties, just like you would ask your best friend or roommate if something looked okay on you.

So chill out and stop hating and put things up for discussion. Or get off the computer already and bake something.

  59. I am a current president of chapter at a down south school.. most are on the right track with everything being mentioned but why has no one said anything about chacos? this is def a frat daddy must GDI's don't rock chacos and everyone knows that a frat daddy loves to see his favorite footwear on a girl! second i guess im alone in this but i don't like girls in sperry's (just guys) we all wore them in high school wth our uniform and thats all that i think when i see someone wearing them (rock em if you like them i guess)

    ReplyDelete
  68. I love this post... it's a great go-to guide for souther sorority fashion. However, I do agree with the fact that we are all individuals and have our own sense of taste. Some southern sorority girls were bred in the North, or even the west. You can't expect everyone to have the same style/wardrobe. If someone wants to wear gold hoops, for the love of God don't bash them on it. Same goes for black nail polish. I say if you can work it, wear it. :)

  72. Girls what are good shoes for when it snows??
I wore my uggs in the snow and they got nasty! And I saw girls in uggs falling all over campus. Snow shoes are so ugly but I don't want to look like a clumsy idiot. Are Hunter boots any good in the winter? Help!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Sorel boots are cute and good snow shoes!

    ReplyDelete
  74. A GDI is a GDI and always will be..but after reading these comments i've noticed many of y'all have gotten caught up in looking the part of a sorostitute rather than also acting the part (being classy alongside looking classy).
Remember that not all GDIs are what you stereotype them to be. I was once in a sorority at a large southern university but I am also an athlete at the school as well. However, cheerleading, being in a sorority, and seeking a medical degree took up too much time so I chose to drop (thankfully cheerleaders are very much like ladies in sororities). But I know many girl athletes (tennis, cross country, etc) who would love to have been in a sorority but couldn't pass up representing our school athletically along with the fat pay check at the end.
Unfortunately, I will be a GDI forever but chose to be one for the prestige of being a college athlete, as many other ladies have chosen as well. And to make it on tv ;)

    ReplyDelete
  75. A word on Jack Rogers: They are RIP-OFFS of Stephen Bonnanno Sandals. SB sandals are the ones that Lilly herself, as well as Jackie Kennedy wore. The JR Navajo is a total and complete rip-off of the SB Palm Beach. Jack Rogers is for new money that is trying to look old. Those of us really in the know will ONLY wear SB.

  82. In love with this whole thing. SO true and just makes me love the greeks more than i already do. GDIs, sucks to suck. Thats all i have to day. I'm in a sorority in the midwest and all i have to say is those northfaces and knitted uggs sadly sometimes come in handy at night when youre at a fire sipping on some lovely sangria. I also love that my chapter is not the only one who sees that investing in monogram northfaces are a fab idea. xoxo

  83. Being from one of the greatest southern state there is, GA!, I do know alittle somthing about being classy. If you live in the north, west, east... im sorry that you cant have the gift of southern class, but yall come on down and well teach you a thing or two. But please....for the love of "G-Dubya", dont let us see yall wearing that Abercombie mess with your pucha shell necklace. It screams GDI!!!.....IN NO WAY IS THIS ACCEPTABLE!!!!!
